Old City Philadelphia Winter Engagement Session
I don’t always shoot engagement sessions in winter, but when I do, I love to shoot engagements in Old City, Philadelphia. When Caitlyn and Mike had approached me about possibly doing an engagement session in December, I immediately thought Old City would be the best place to get some incredible photos.
Why does Old City work so well for engagement sessions?
1.) Firstly, there is an inherent charm about the old row homes, cobbled streets and architecture. One of my favorite places to start sessions is at the Merchant’s Exchange building. It has a beautiful marble facade and always compliments skin tones and makes for a really nice aesthetic. I loved that Caitlyn and Mike had thought a lot about their outfit selections for the shoot, and it complimented the feel of the shoot perfectly.
2.) December means no other shoots, no tourists, and flexible schedules. Old City can be a busy place (particularly Merchant’s Exchange) so one benefit of shooting in December is we have the whole place to ourselves.
3.) Old City has great dining and entertainment (plugging my favorite- the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society) so it could be a great place to enjoy a bite to eat after the shoot- always a good idea.
If you’ve made it this far, here are some pro tips to make the most out of your Old City Engagement Session…
1.) Firstly, if you are planning for winter, snow is your friend. We had a little bit of snow in this engagement session, and it was pure magic.
2.) For winter engagement sessions, prepare to start the session pretty early. This particular shoot was in December, so we had to start around 3pm to make sure we had enough light for the whole shoot.
3.) Prepare for a little bit of walking in Old City. There are so many places to shoot an Old City Engagement session, and many are within walking distance. Be prepared to do a little walking, and keep to one or two outfits.
4.) Wear neutral colors or earth tones. These colors look great in winter (check out the Pinterest for more inspiration!)
