Engagement Session at Giant’s Stairs
Looking to plan a shoot in Maine? Check out Katie & Logan’s engagement session at Giant’s Stairs in Bailey Island, Maine.
I had the most amazing opportunity to photograph Katie and Logan’s incredible wedding at the Historic Harpswell Inn in Harpswell, Maine this past fall. Katie has been coming to this particular location every summer growing up, and during the wedding planning process decided she wanted to have some additional photos taken here, as it is such a special place to her family. I was all about it and eagerly jumped at the opportunity- and I am so glad I did! We woke up extra early to do a sunrise session at Giant’s Stairs in Bailey Island and the weather/ lighting could not be better.
Thinking of doing a session in Maine? Here are a few tips…
1.) Firstly, think about timing, location, and light. Obviously Maine is on the east coast, so to capture that amazing light coming off the water, doing a sunrise session is a no brainer. We had to be strategic where exactly we could do the session in the best light, so I scouted out the location the night before to plan out a few spots where we would have great light and great backdrops.
2.) Secondly, always do an extra session if you are planning on doing a destination wedding in Maine. There are too many incredible locations to just do photos on one day, and it is always fun to get photos in a second location!
3.) Be prepared to scale some rocks, or do some walking. The coast is extremely rocky, so just be prepared (heels may not be a great choice).
4.) Plan out your outfits ahead of time with a Pinterest board!
5.) Katie prepared a bouquet out of some hydrangeas which I loved. Bringing some flowers is never a bad idea!
Some more practical tips…
1.) Poison ivy is everywhere along the coast. I have found this not only true of Maine, but many coastal locations in New England have a ton of poison ivy. Just know where to look for it, and maybe have something to cover your legs when trying to get out to the water.
2.) The rocks can be slippery, so plan your footwear accordingly. It’s nothing to be too worried about, but is worth taking some practical measures to ensure you stay safe.
3.) Sunrise in September is chilly. I think at the start of this session it was around 35 degrees. It warmed up quickly, but definitely something to think about!
All in all, if you are looking to plan an engagement session in Maine, do it! I promise it’s worth it, and you know who to call for pictures! 😉
